The Parkinson’s Disease and Paraquat Connection

There is scientific research linking paraquat, an herbicide used in weed killers in rural areas such as farms, vineyards and orchards to the development of Parkinson’s disease.

ANSWER THIS CONFIDENTIAL FORM

What is Paraquat?

Paraquat is a herbicide developed in the 1960s and first marketed under the brand name Gramoxone. It is used to kill weeds and grasses in more than 100 field, fruit, vegetable, and plantation crops, and is often applied to the same land multiple times in a year.

Paraquat creates oxidative stress in plant and animal cells. In the presence of molecular oxygen, Paraquat undergoes redox cycling. The redox cycling in turn creates “reactive oxygen species,” molecules that initiate chemical reactions that interfere with cellular function necessary to sustain cell life—in plant cells, photosynthesis, and in animal cells, cellular respiration.

How does Paraquat work?

Rather than spend money researching how to make their products safer, companies will hire scientists to create favorable “research” about their products and lobbyists to ensure government regulations do not affect their bottom line. The pesticide industry has known about the link between Paraquat and Parkinson’s disease for decades, but has always found an excuse to ignore the research.

The Environmental Protection Agency has turned a blind eye to this research as well. Unfortunately, the result is that thousands of men and women become sick from these products. The simple truth is this: the only thing that holds the pesticide industry accountable is juries.

About Paraquat Class Action Law Suits

Across the country, there are currently a number of lawsuits against Syngenta and Chevron, the two companies most responsible for the manufacturing and sale of Paraquat. Although there is not currently a class action, we anticipate filing one on behalf of individuals exposed to Paraquat but who do not currently have Parkinson’s disease. We will seek to have regular medical monitoring of their neurological functions paid for so that if they ultimately develop Parkinson’s disease, it will be caught early.

We will also continue filing individual lawsuits on behalf of our clients who currently have Parkinson’s, and expect that many of these individual cases will ultimately be consolidated in federal multidistrict litigation, a class-action-like proceeding where all federal cases are grouped in one court for pretrial purposes and, likely, resolution.
